With the addition of a 17th game, the KC Chiefs will host the Packers in 2021. This is a matchup that has primetime television written all over it.

In the 2019 season, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Green Bay Packers in Week 8 of the regular season. The game, unsurprisingly, was scheduled for Sunday Night Football and everyone was pumped to watch Patrick Mahomes go head-to-head with Aaron Rodgers under the bright lights of Arrowhead Stadium.

Unfortunately, while the matchup still took place, Mahomes was not able to play in it due to getting injured the previous week. Instead, Matt Moore took over the Chiefs’ quarterbacking duties and while he played well, the Chiefs ended up losing a tight battle.

It appeared after Mahomes missed that game that these two would likely see each other in a Super Bowl or would have to wait until 2023 to face each other again. Well, now that the NFL has added an extra game, the wait is over. We’ll see Mahomes vs Rodgers (hopefully for real this time) in the regular season this year and it needs to be on primetime.

The KC Chiefs’ game vs the Packers has to be on primetime television.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

If I had to pick one game on the Chiefs’ schedule to go on primetime this year, it’d be this one solely for the Mahomes vs Rodgers matchup. This game also pits two teams who have been to back-to-back conference championship games (with the Chiefs winning both of theirs and the Packers losing both of theirs) and two historic teams. This matchup also has historical ties, as it would be a rematch of Super Bowl I.

Sunday Night Football seems like the most likely destination for this game, but maybe the NFL will throw us for a loop and have these two teams play on Thursday Night Football or Monday Night Football instead. The Chiefs usually get at least five primetime games every year and this will surely be one of them.

Maybe this time, the NFL will schedule it earlier in the year so that fewer injuries have occurred and we can be near certain that both Mahomes and Rodgers will be healthy and active for this game.
