5 candidates to be the Chiefs new No. 3 running back in 2021
RB3 Options for Chiefs in 2021 – No. 1: Darwin Thompson (In-House)
The likeliest option to be the No. 3 running back in Kansas City is Darwin Thompson, who the team spent a sixth-round pick on in the 2019 NFL Draft. Thompson was an intriguing prospect at Utah State with his ability to both run with the ball and catch the ball as well and that’s likely what drew Andy Reid to him.

Thompson received a lot of hype after he joined the team and while he hasn’t been terrible, fans really just haven’t gotten to see much from him. He rushed for just 128 yards and a touchdown while tallying 43 receiving yards as a rookie in 2019 and this past year had 97 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown along with 65 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
The Chiefs have mostly used Thompson on special teams and he’ll probably continue to be a contributor there in 2021. The hope was that Thompson would earn the RB2 job but that simply hasn’t come to fruition.
Now, Thompson is likely going to have to fight for the third spot on the running back depth list, but he’s certainly the frontrunner to win the job as of now.
