RB3 Options for Chiefs in 2021 – No. 4: Rex Burkhead (Free Agent)

While the Chiefs have been fairly quiet as far as signing free agents, that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there trying to bring guys in. It’d have to be appealing to the remaining running backs on the roster to sign with the Chiefs because they’d have a shot to win a ring in Kansas City.

For Rex Burkhead, that’d be no new experience, as he won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2018. In fact, he was the running back who had the key touchdown in overtime against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game to send the Patriots to that Super Bowl. It still hurts to talk about.

Burkhead is the definition of a third-string running back and would be the perfect guy to bring in to fill the position in Kansas City. He had 274 yards and three rushing touchdowns last year while also grabbing three more touchdown passes through the air as well.

Burkhead is a versatile player who could give Patrick Mahomes another pass-catching target. The former Nebraska Cornhusker is 30 years old and will be 31 by the time the 2021 season starts, so that’s one of the big knocks on him, but remember, he’d only be the RB3 for this team behind two younger options.
