Melvin Ingram is going to visit the KC Chiefs this week. He’d be a nice piece on this defense.

The Kansas City Chiefs need help when it comes to getting after the quarterback and Melvin Ingram could provide them with another pass-rushing threat. Chiefs fans are familiar with Ingram, as he played with the Chargers for the first nine years of his career and was let go after only appearing in seven games last year.

Ingram was injured early last season, which is what led to the decline in production. Prior to that, however, he was a great pass-rushing threat, notching seven sacks in each of the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The KC Chiefs need to upgrade their defense, especially when it comes to pressuring the quarterback.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

The big question with Ingram will be how healthy he is. If the Chiefs feel confident that he can play and make an impact, then they should sign him. They’re the first teams to get a look at him in free agency and therefore, can decide if he goes on any more free-agent visits after he meets with them.

The Chiefs need all of the help they can get at defensive end and, when healthy, Melvin Ingram is a top-tier talent at the position. They managed to keep Taco Charlton in-house, but he didn’t provide much last year, and it doesn’t appear that Tanoh Kpassagnon or Alex Okafor will return, as there’s been no discussions of the Chiefs re-signing either of them.

Obviously, the injury concerns are there with Ingram, and understandable so, but I’d love to see the Chiefs sign the former Charger. He’s wreaked havoc against the Chiefs in the past and now he’d have a chance to return the favor against his former team, who is looking to pass the Chiefs in the divisional standings.

If Ingram looks good and healthy, there’s no reason why Kansas City should let him leave without a contract in hand. He had seven sacks just two seasons ago, and pairing him up with the likes of Chris Jones and Frank Clark would really help this pass rush thrive in 2021.

Of course, the team should still look to address the area in the draft, but Ingram would give fans a little more hope about the pass-rushing unit heading into the season.
