Quarterbacks for KC Chiefs to target in free agency: Blake Bortles

I don’t know about you, but I can’t hear Blake Bortles‘ name without thinking of Jason Mendoza in The Good Place. Bortles hasn’t hooked on with a team since the Jaguars parted ways with him a few years ago, but he could be a really nice backup option for a team like the Chiefs.

Bortles spent the 2020 season with the Broncos and was buried on their quarterback depth chart. Prior to that, he was a backup with the Rams in 2019 and attempted just two passes. He’ll be looking for a new team to try and revive his career with in 2021.

Bortles isn’t a good option as a starter and that’s been proven, but he could be a good backup. He’s shown he can put up decent numbers, throwing for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2015 (his second year in the league), but he also threw 18 interceptions that year. He’s been good with his legs too, rushing for at least 310 yards in every season he was with the Jaguars.

Turnovers are the biggest problem with Bortles, but knowing that he’d only be a backup could be reason enough to bring him in.

Quarterbacks for KC Chiefs to target in free agency: Cam Newton

Hey, why not, right? This is a post about potential options to bring in at quarterback and Cam Newton could be someone who makes sense. He’s not good enough to be a starter anymore, but as a backup with a good team, Newton could find new life.

Newton had a rough year with the Patriots in 2020, throwing just eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passing numbers were not good, but Newton still showed he can make plays with his legs, finishing with 12 rushing touchdowns this past season.

Newton is someone the Chiefs could probably get for a bargain and if he decides he wants to chase a ring in the final stretch of his career, coming to Kansas City could be a really smart move for him.
