Chiefs News: Marty Schottenheimer passes away at age 77
In Chiefs news, former KC Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer has passed away at the age of 77.
The announcement was made on Tuesday morning that former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer passed away at the age of 77 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Schottenheimer coached the Chiefs from 1989-1998 and went 101-58-1 during that time. When he took over the Chiefs in 1989, they were a terrible franchise that hadn’t experienced many winning seasons. Schottenheimer changed that, getting them to the playoffs in 1990 and always making the Chiefs a force in the AFC.

The biggest blemish on Schottenheimer’s time with the Chiefs is that they could never get over the hump in the playoffs. The team went just 3-7 under him in the postseason with their best playoff performance coming in 1994 with Joe Montana as the quarterback. The defenses were the highlights of most of those teams, but Schottenheimer’s coaching was always top-notch.
Eventually, Schottenheimer resigned, finishing out his coaching career with Washington and later the Chargers where he last coached in 2006. He spent 21 years as a head coach and had just two losing seasons, which is a testament to how good of a coach he was. His worst season with the Chiefs was when they went 7-9 and that was his final year in Kansas City in 1998.

This is very sad for not just the Chiefs organization, but for all of football. Schottenheimer was a coaching legend and will go down as one of the best Chiefs coaches in the history of the franchise. Not winning in the playoffs was frustrating, but as soon as Schottenheimer left, the Chiefs went downhill for quite a long time.
It wasn’t until the organization hired Andy Reid that they finally rebounded and became relevant again. Some even thought after Schottenheimer left that there was a curse on the franchise, but fortunately, we’ve seen that curse lifted with the franchise winning a Super Bowl last year.
Schottenheimer has battled Alzheimer’s since 2014 and passed away peacefully on Monday. He’ll always be one of the all-time greats in the Chiefs organization.
Rest in peace, Marty Schottenheimer.
