Chiefs News: Eric Bieniemy out of the running for Texans head coach job
Chiefs news involves how the Houston Texans won’t be hiring Eric Bieniemy as their next head coach.
What seemed like a foregone conclusion a month ago is no longer the case. The Kansas City Chiefs will have Eric Bieniemy back as their offensive coordinator in 2021, as he’s officially out of the running for the vacant head coach job in Houston per John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.
According to McClain, Houston has hired David Culley. Obviously, this is disappointing for Bieniemy, who has now been gypped out of a head coach job for two years running. Last year was understandable, as he was still an up and coming name, but it really did feel like a certainty that Bieniemy would be departing KC after this season to become the head coach of a team.
Bieniemy interviewed with five of the six teams who initially fired their head coaches (the Eagles joined that group much later) and one by one, those five teams hired different men to run their franchise. Houston initially did not request an interview with him and as we learned later, that upset Deshaun Watson, who wanted Bieniemy as his next head coach. Watson’s even wanting to be traded now as a result of this disaster of an offseason for Houston.
Obviously, Bieniemy should want a head coach job, but he more than likely dodged a huge bullet by the Texans passing on him. That organization is a dumpster fire right now and Bieniemy deserves to go somewhere he’ll be able to make a positive impact.

As McClain pointed out on Twitter, the Texans did hire someone off the Andy Reid coaching tree, as Culley spent 16 years with Reid split between Philadelphia and Kansas City. This certainly wasn’t what Texans fans had in mind when it came to finding their next head coach, however.
At the end of the day, Eric Bieniemy deserves an opportunity to be a head coach somewhere and everyone seems to feel the same way about that, except the teams needing a new head coach. For whatever reason, Bieniemy has been passed on again, so you know he’ll be extra motivated to prove himself in both the Super Bowl and in the 2021 season.
The Texans’ loss is the Chiefs’ gain.
