The KC Royals have made a splash this offseason, but they shouldn’t slow down now, especially with Yasiel Puig still available.

Dayton Moore has proven that he believes in the Kansas City Royals‘ abilities this year when it comes to competing. He’s done a nice job adding talent to this young roster and trying to give them any possible leg up in what’s going to be an incredibly tough division.

Moore isn’t looking to slow down any time soon, as the Royals are in the running to add Yasiel Puig for 2021. Puig didn’t play in 2020 but he’s getting attention from the Royals, Yankees, and Marlins, according to Jim Bowden.

Puig spent the first six years of his career with the Dodgers where he made it to an All-Star Game in 2014. Puig has also played for Cincinnati and Cleveland. He’s definitely a hothead, but in the right situation, could resurrect his career for sure.

The KC Royals would be a good landing spot for Yasiel Puig.

The Royals are still looking to add outfielders. It might seem like they have plenty of options out there, but that group is unproven for the most part. Puig is a right fielder, which is the very position the Royals have had trouble filling in recent years, so this addition would make sense. He’s really only played in right field the past few years, but that wouldn’t be an issue in Kansas City.

If Puig was acquired, the Royals could be even more creative with their lineups, as they’d have Puig, Franchy Cordero, Whit Merrifield Ryan McBroom, Edward Olivares, and Jorge Soler as potential outfield options. Puig could mostly man right field, then Cordero could patrol left field with Merrifield in center field while Soler remains as the DH.

The last time we saw Puig in the majors was with Cleveland in 2019 where he slashed .297/.377/.423 with two home runs and 23 RBI through 207 plate appearances. He played in 49 games that year. The numbers were impressive from Puig and he’s only 30 years old, so he’s nowhere past his prime yet.

The only real knock on this move would be that the Royals would still be in search of a left-handed bat. Puig is a righty and that doesn’t really help the Royals in an area of need. That’s about the only true downside to this signing and it’s not even a knock on Puig.

Signing Yasiel Puig would be a really smart move for the Kansas City Royals and hopefully, Dayton Moore stays aggressive and can bring him in on a one-year deal. At best, Puig pans out and the Royals can potentially trade him for prospects if they’re not in contention. At worst, it’s a one-year deal that doesn’t work out and the Royals can move on without much worry.
