6. Houston Texans

Welp.

When I originally drafted these rankings, I had the Texans at No. 4. But that was merely hours before they decided to hire Nick Caserio away from the New England Patriots to be the team’s new general manager. This was before reports that the Texans decided to pass on interviewing Bieniemy. This was before reports that superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson may ask for a trade.

A few things:

  • Why do teams remain infatuated with hiring people from the Patriots? The guy the Texans just fired is the most successful branch of the gnarled Bill Belichick Coaching Tree, which isn’t a good sign. And the personnel guys have all failed, too.
  • I’m not sure what to make of Watson potentially wanting out, but I don’t blame him. Where could he end up? What about the AFC West?
  • As for Houston passing on Bieniemy, maybe that shouldn’t be so surprising considering this info from Yahoo! NFL reporter Charles Robinson:

Ultimately, with Watson, this is a tough job because the Texans don’t have many assets after Bill O’Brien squandered them. Without Watson, it’s an even tougher job, because while Houston will definitely recoup some draft assets if he’s traded, the organization won’t get anything close to a quarterback of Watson’s caliber.

Weird situation down in Houston.
