Chad Henne is starting for the KC Chiefs and he can prove himself in this game.

The Kansas City Chiefs have nothing to play for on Sunday when the Chargers come to town and that’s why it makes perfect sense for the starters to sit. It’ll be the majority of KC’s backups against LA’s starting roster, which obviously won’t be the most exciting to watch, but it’s a chance for these backups to prove themselves.

Obviously, the biggest story is that Chad Henne is getting the start over Patrick Mahomes and it’ll be Henne’s first start since 2014 when he was a member of the Jaguars. Henne’s days as a starting quarterback in the NFL are likely over (at least barring any injuries), but the 11-year veteran has a chance to prove he’s still a top-tier backup in the league.

NFL teams covet experienced veteran quarterbacks, especially when they have a younger quarterback at the helm. We’ve all seen the staying power that Chase Daniel has in the league as a backup and how much money he’s made in that role for the last decade. If Henne plays well against the Chargers, a team in need of a backup quarterback for 2021 is going to take notice and bring him in.

Chad Henne might have the most to gain out of any KC Chiefs player in this game.

KC Kingdom’s own John McCarty wrote an article about quarterback prospects the Chiefs should target in the 2021 NFL Draft and in that article, he mentioned this is the route KC will need to go in now when it comes to addressing their backup spot. Having a veteran as a backup is the correct route when a team’s quarterback is still on their rookie deal because they can afford to pay that veteran the money he’s looking for.

Now that Mahomes has signed a very large extension and has proven he doesn’t need a mentor any more, the Chiefs now need to look for the cheap option at the backup quarterback position. The draft is obviously the easiest way to do this.

Henne probably won’t be re-signing with the Chiefs this offseason but if he plays well against the Chargers, he’ll have an opportunity to hook on with another team and be their backup for the next year or two. Backup quarterbacks are very important so it’s crucial for Henne to prove that he’s one of the best options on the market this spring.
