Sit of the Week: Derek Carr, QB, Las Vegas Raider

I know this seems counter-intuitive, as one would think my start of Nelson Agholor should also result in Derek Carr having a good game. That isn’t the whole story though.

In PPR leagues, the baseline of multiple catches for Agholor is there for him to turn in a nice game regardless of the offensive output of the rest of the team, so he has a safe floor to go along with his high ceiling. The same just can’t be said for Carr.

The problem is, Carr should be in line for a nice game, and by all accounts still could blow up. The problem is he has glaring games on his record that you just can’t trust with your entire season on the line. The Atlanta Falcons have been a sieve when it comes to passing yards this season, and guess how many fantasy points Carr had against them? 1.6. That period isn’t a typo.

The Denver Broncos are also a decent matchup, and Carr turned in a paltry 7.16 points in that game as well. The Cleveland Browns haven’t been able to stop anyone through the air this year unless that person’s name is Derek Carr. He only had 111 passing yards on 25 attempts against them.

You get the point here. Carr is capable of having great fantasy weeks, but he just has too many blemishes on his resumé this season and in past seasons to ignore that he can single-handedly ruin your fantasy season. There are better options out there on the waiver wire.

Quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, and Philip Rivers all have either juicy matchups or have a much higher ceiling than Carr. Avoid the Raiders quarterback this week in your lineups.
