Should the KC Chiefs trade for a tight end at the 2020 deadline?

The KC Chiefs have the best tight end in the league, but should they trade for a legitimate No. 2 option?

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday and the Kansas City Chiefs will have some decisions to make. While tight end isn’t a weakness considering that Travis Kelce is the best in the league, the Chiefs have had some problems finding a solid No. 2 option behind him.

Right now, the current backup options are Nick Keizer and Ricky Seals-Jones, neither of whom have impressed at all in seven games this season. Keizer has just three catches for 38 yards and missed what would have been a huge first down reception against the Raiders. Seals-Jones has only been targeted once and didn’t haul in that lone target.

Kelce is as good as they come at tight end, but if the Chiefs could get another talented option as their TE2 and have both guys take the field on offense, it’d open this offense up even more and make them nearly impossible to stop.

The KC Chiefs don’t need a tight end, but if they want to add depth, there are plenty of options that could make their offense even scarier.

Some of the bigger names potentially on the trade market are Evan Engram, Gerald Everett, Darren Fells, Chris Herndon, David Njoku, and Kyle Rudolph. Out of all of these, the ones who would probably be the most realistic to acquire would be Engram and Herndon since the Giants and Jets aren’t going anywhere this season. Fells could also be an option, but the Texans likely wouldn’t want to do business with the Chiefs since they’re one of their biggest adversaries.

While I’d love to see the Kansas City Chiefs grab another tight end, I’m not sure that it’s worth it to trade draft picks for a position that isn’t a necessity. I’d rather see the team heavily look at the offensive line and trade for some guys to plug in along there. Linebacker and cornerback are also bigger needs than that of a backup tight end.

Hopefully the Chiefs address the No. 2 tight end this offseason whether it’s through free agency or the draft because if Kelce ever were to go down (knock on wood), this offense would be pressed to find anyone who is anywhere close to giving the offense what he can.
