2. Jordan Ta’amu

Jordan Ta’amu was one of the stars of the XFL and was able to turn that into a contract with the Chiefs. Ta’amu is definitely more of an exciting prospect than Chad Henne and Matt Moore and could be an excellent backup quarterback moving forward.

Despite the excitement with Ta’amu, he probably still isn’t as ready to go at this point, so he is still a long shot for the third quarterback spot. The Chiefs save no money by cutting Henne and he has been taking all of the second string snaps, so he is virtually a lock.

Moore did an excellent job when filling in for Mahomes last season, so he’s probably got the upper hand on the third spot. That’s not great news for Ta’amu.

Nevertheless, it would be fun to see Ta’amu get a roster spot, so we are still going to root for him. If he is unable to make the cut this season, by this time next year – after spending a year on the practice squad – he should have a terrific shot at making the active roster.

1. Tershawn Wharton, DT

Wharton is may be the longest of all long shots, but it appears that he may be one of the best stories of training camp this season as James Palmer recently reported that he is expected to make the roster. Wharton is definitely not a player that was expected to make the roster but is a player I have been rooting for.

Wharton comes from a local small school, Missouri S&T, which is much more known for academics than for football. Going to the NFL was definitely not on his radar going into college and even after dominating as a Miner, it still seemed like a long shot for him to make an NFL roster, but against all odds it looks like he is going to be a Chief.

He is kind of a mystery as to what he will bring to the table. There is not as much Missouri S&T film as there are for players coming from a Power 5 conference, but how can you not root for a kid like this?

Hopefully he comes right in and is able to fill in as a depth piece at defensive tackle while Mike Pennel is on suspension and is able to solidify his spot for the remainder of the season.

Honorable Mentions:

Marcus Kemp, Lavert Hill, Rodney Clemons, Demone Harris, Yasir Durant
