What should Kansas City Chiefs fans expect from UDFA defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton in 2020?

Making it onto an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent is tough as is, but throw in when a player is from a lesser known school like Missouri S&T (a Division II university) and the challenge becomes even tougher. That will be what Tershawn Wharton gets to try and accomplish this summer as he makes his push toward the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 55-man roster.

Wharton was a star at Missouri S&T in 2018 and according to their official website,

"Earned numerous honors following the season, including being selected honorable mention All-America on Don Hansen‘s squad…was an all-Super Region 3 selection on that team as well…named first-team All-GLVC after ranking second in the conference in sacks and tackles for a loss…completed the campaign with 18 tackles for a loss and nine sacks among his 54 tackles on the year."

Clearly he was a talented player for the Miners and has untapped potential. Even with Wharton’s success at Missouri S&T, making it onto the Chiefs’ roster won’t be a cakewalk for him, but the fact that he made it this far is telling as to what kind of player he could be.

What Kansas City Chiefs fans should expect from Tershawn Wharton

In all likelihood, Wharton finds himself on the practice squad and that’s best case scenario for the Division II standout. He’ll have his work cut out for him this summer, but fortunately defensive tackle is a position where injuries could occur and promotions certainly should happen throughout the course of the 2020 season.

The Chiefs already have one of the best defensive tackles in the league in Chris Jones and the depth at the position consists of Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel, and Khalen Saunders. The Chiefs also have Braxton Hoyett and Devaroe Lawrence who will be competing with Wharton for a shot at making the team.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Jones was banged up a bit last year and this could also be his final season as a member of the Chiefs due to the large amount of money he’s probably going to receive in the next year. Pennel is also only signed for another year, so that is going to pave the way for Nnadi and Saunders to show they can continue to help the line.

Wharton might be one of the most intriguing names in the UDFA class for the Chiefs this year and it’s hard not to root for the guy. Hopefully he’s able to make enough of an impression this summer and find his way onto at least the practice squad.
