KC Chiefs defense would remain top ten unit with Matt Judon

The KC Chiefs lost a few names on defense this offseason, but Matt Judon would keep them as a top tier defensive unit.

When looking at the Kansas City Chiefs roster, the weakest position on the field for the defending Super Bowl champions is, without a doubt, at linebacker.

The Chiefs haven’t had that sideline-to-sideline linebacker since Derrick Johnson was released following the 2017 season. They drafted Willie Gay in the second round this year in the hopes that he could become that kind of player for them, but it’d be foolish to expect Gay to be anything close to what DJ was, especially right out of the gate as a rookie.

Kansas City also has Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson as their two main linebackers, so there’s definitely room for improvement at the position.

If the KC Chiefs wanted to upgrade at linebacker, Matt Judon would be their best bet.

Bryan Murphy of NFL Analysis Network explored this idea and it’s an intriguing one for sure.

This wouldn’t be an easy feat by any means, as the Ravens know how good the Chiefs defense could be with Judon and they’d make sure KC gave up quite the haul to acquire the soon-to-be fifth-year linebacker.

Matt Judon was a fifth round pick by the Ravens in the 2016 NFL Draft and hailed from Grand Valley State, a Division II school. He’s risen to the top of Baltimore’s defense and notched nine and a half sacks for the 14-2 Ravens a season ago. Not bad for a Division II linebacker, huh?

Baltimore is obviously high on him, as they slapped him with the franchise tag earlier this offseason. They have not agreed to terms with their former fifth round steal, however, and that’s why the Grand Valley State product could be on the trade block.

Judon expressed interest in joining the Chiefs last month when he tweeted at Kansas City’s own Tyrann Mathieu inquiring about the real estate here. Of course he wants to come play for the Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Who wouldn’t right now?

In a perfect world, this trade happens and the Chiefs defense gets better. Unfortunately, it’s not realistic for several reasons with the biggest being that it’s doubtful the Ravens trade him to Kansas City unless they give up a king’s ransom for him and that’d be silly for them to do.

The Chiefs and Ravens are the two best teams in the AFC right now, so why would Baltimore want their best competition in the conference to get better? The answer is they wouldn’t.

Matt Judon would look great in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform and he’d undoubtedly help keep this defense in the top ten of the league, but when it comes down to it, the Chiefs defense is fine. Hitchens and Wilson aren’t Pro Bowlers or anything like that, but they’re serviceable. Gay is a promising young prospect who should be able to heavily contribute as a rookie this year.

Team Name is Fine, but Time to Move on From Traditions. dark. Next

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Would you entertain the idea of trading for Matt Judon or should the Chiefs roll with what they have on defense?
