Nebraska football fans were hyping up quarterback Adrian Martinez last season and he disappointed. The 2020 season should hopefully have different results for Martinez.

After an electric freshman campaign by Adrian Martinez, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were hoping for a follow-up performance from him as a sophomore.

Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.

Martinez went from a 2,617 yard and 17 touchdown season to throwing for just 1,956 yards and ten touchdowns this past season. He threw eight interceptions in 2018 and threw nine in 2019.

Martinez’s rushing numbers didn’t skip a beat, as he rushed for the same amount of yards both years and had just one less rushing score this past season. An argument could be made, however, that Martinez tends to rely on his legs a little too much.

David Cobb of CBS Sports wrote that he sees Martinez having a bounce-back season for Nebraska in 2020, which would be a welcomed sight for Husker fans.

"Ultimately, the frustrations of 2019 should be behind him now, and with new offensive coordinator Matt Lubick arriving to provide the entire unit with a fresh start, Martinez is poised for a significant resurgence. He is too talented, and there is too much returning talent on this Nebraska team for the Cornhuskers to languish offensively again."

Having a new offensive coordinator should definitely help elevate Martinez’s game and can hopefully get him back to the player he was as a freshman. The Huskers will absolutely need Martinez to be that player if they want to make it to a bowl game in 2020 because their schedule is BRUTAL this year.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers

Throw in the fact that Nebraska also has Luke McCaffrey on the quarterback depth chart and that should be more motivation for Martinez to up the ante as a junior. McCaffrey showed he could be a reliable option at quarterback and the leash should not be long for Martinez.

The good news is that Nebraska fans have seen Martinez win games and that means he can do it again. This past season, the Cornhuskers offensive line was atrocious and it was easy to see Martinez panic in a lot of games because he wasn’t getting any time to make plays.

The 2020 season is going to be a big one for Nebraska football. If Martinez can’t put up numbers and win games for the Huskers, then Scott Frost will need to move on from him for good.
