The AFC West has one of the weakest group of quarterbacks, even with Patrick Mahomes of the KC Chiefs in the mix.

Sean Wagner-McGough of CBS Sports put together his rankings of divisions by quarterbacks and the AFC West came in seventh on the list. Not even Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs could propel the AFC West into a higher spot.

Here is why Wagner-McGough had the AFC West so low on his rankings,

"In the end, the AFC West has one great quarterback and three quarterbacks who could all conceivably play at a low level in 2020. That’s why the division is ranked this low, despite Mahomes’ presence. That said, if you wanted to flip the AFC West with the NFC East because of just how much better Mahomes is than everyone else, I wouldn’t argue."

Wagner-McGough goes into more detail about each team’s quarterback and obviously praises Mahomes as the best player in the game. The other teams, however, aren’t fully sure of what kind of player their signal caller is just yet.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Denver is high on Drew Lock, but he didn’t play a full season as a rookie, so the jury is still out on him and what he can do. If he can get the Broncos to the playoffs in 2020, then sure, he could be their answer, but a regression is absolutely possible for the Mizzou product.

Derek Carr had one good year for the Raiders and with the franchise moving to Las Vegas, it’s boom or bust time for him in 2020. If he has another lackluster campaign this year, the Raiders could be looking to move on from their former second round pick.

The Chargers parted ways with long-time quarterback Philip Rivers this offseason and took Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick. Herbert will probably see some action for the Chargers this year because Tyrod Taylor hasn’t proven to be anything more than a sturdy backup.

Lock still has to get through an entire season as the starter and Herbert is an unknown, so that puts the AFC West low on this list for a good reason. It’s Mahomes and a lot of “meh” quarterbacking the division.

The only division with a lower ranking than the AFC West is the AFC East, which isn’t surprising since Tom Brady isn’t there anymore. Even if he had been, we all saw he was getting worn down last season and the AFC East still might have been in last even with Brady still in New England.

Here were the rankings:

  1. NFC South
  2. NFC West
  3. AFC North
  4. NFC North
  5. AFC South
  6. NFC East
  7. AFC West
  8. AFC East

There’s really no debating that the NFC has better quarterbacks and this list is yet another indicator of that. Both the NFC South and NFC West are absolutely stacked when it comes to quarterbacks. (The Chiefs get to play the NFC South this year by the way)

The AFC is trying to get to that level, but Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Deshaun Watson are the ones leading the pack in that conference. While the AFC might not have as much quarterback talent as the NFC, the last two league MVPs have come from the AFC, which is definitely worth noting.

With how much better Mahomes is from the rest of the division, it’s no wonder the KC Chiefs have run away with the AFC West in recent years.

Where would you rank the AFC West when it comes to quarterback talent?
