The KC Chiefs drafted LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and he’s the most exciting new player heading into 2020.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report compiled a list of every player that each NFL team should be excited to watch in the preseason and it should come as no surprise that for the Kansas City Chiefs, the answer was Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Edwards-Helaire wrecked havoc in 2019 during LSU’s run to the National Championship and he’ll be a welcomed addition in the Chiefs’ offensive plans in 2020, as they too, are coming off of a championship season.

The Chiefs’ run game wasn’t great last year and while some might have been irritated that the team chose to grab a running back in the first round, it could pay dividends for this squad moving forward. Running back was the biggest weakness offensively and adding someone like CEH immediately gives them a boost in that department.

More from Clyde Edwards-Helaire

"The Chiefs should get a better idea of how they can use Edwards-Helaire during the preseason. He is a capable runner and receiver—he had 1,414 rushing yards and 453 receiving yards last season."

The preseason running back competition will be huge for this team because they have a few names at the position who are trying to make a name for themselves.

Damien Williams probably wins the RB1 job simply due to experience, but CEH isn’t going to be someone who peruses the sideline. He’ll be utilized frequently, but as Knox noted, the preseason will be a time for Kansas City to figure out how they can use him early on.

The Chiefs also have Darrel Williams, DeAndre Washington, and Darwin Thompson looking to make a splash in the preseason this summer. Williams and Thompson were both on the team last year with Williams getting injured and Thompson not being as much of a factor in the offense as fans were hoping.

Washington was brought in via free agency and he spent time with Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech, but played for the Raiders prior to joining the Super Bowl champs. He’s one of the more intriguing names at the position because he could surprise some people for sure.

While I agree that Edwards-Helaire is one of the players fans should be most excited about this year, hopefully he doesn’t get too much wear and tear during the preseason. He’s going to be an important piece for the KC Chiefs in their “Run It Back” tour and in the coming years as well.
