The KC Royals and the other 29 MLB teams will look to get their 2020 seasons underway and one player to benefit the most from the delayed start is shortstop Adalberto Mondesi.

Major League Baseball finally has a start date for the 2020 season and that means we’ll get to see the Kansas City Royals in action sooner rather than later.

Originally, Opening Day was going to be held at the end of March in Chicago against the White Sox and it’s very possible that Adalberto Mondesi wouldn’t have been healthy enough to play in that game. With the season being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, Mondesi has had time to recover and, as a result, should be able to take the field for Opening Day.

Mondesi injured his shoulder last September and missed the final month of the 2019 season. Up until that point, the Royals shortstop had been slashing .263/.291/.424 with nine home runs and 62 RBI while stealing 43 bases. He also hit ten triples.

Having Mondesi on the roster to start the season will definitely help this young group, who won’t have a regular 162 games to try and make some magic happen. The 2020 season will be shortened to 60 games and that means the Royals are going to have to bring it early on if they want any shot at making it to the postseason.

The pressure is on for Mondesi these next few seasons due to the team having drafted Bobby Witt Jr. second overall in last year’s draft. Witt is only 20 years old and will need some time to develop in the minor leagues before making his way to Kauffman Stadium, but as soon as he’s ready for his big league call up, that could spell the end for Mondesi as a Royal.

Had the 2020 season started on time, Mondesi probably wouldn’t have been healthy enough to play until a month into the season at the very least. Even though the team was optimistic about him being ready for Opening Day, now there are no doubts.

Mondesi has battled with injuries throughout his career and hopefully he’ll be able to stay healthy in 2020 because the Kansas City Royals are definitely going to need his leadership and production in this 60-game season.

Hopefully Mondesi can be the player Royals fans expect him to be and do as much damage as possible in 2020.
