Kansas City Chiefs: Repeat Super Bowl title only way 2020 is successful
For the Kansas City Chiefs, there’s only one thing that needs to happen in order for the 2020 season to be a success and that’s being the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2004 Patriots.
Prior to the 2019 season, the Kansas City Chiefs hadn’t made it to the Super Bowl in 50 years, so getting there was obviously the goal for last season. The year prior, the Chiefs made it to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1993 season, but fell short of the Super Bowl thanks to an offsides call.
With the Super Bowl title under their belts, the Chiefs now have one goal heading into the 2020 season and that’s repeating as Super Bowl champions – a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since the New England Patriots did it in the 2004 season after winning the title in 2003.
Since then, teams might have won multiple titles, but they haven’t come in back to back years. That’ll be the trend that the Chiefs try to buck in 2020 and as such, a repeat title is what Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report listed as what needed to happen for Kansas City to have a successful season.

"It’s been 15 years since a team last successfully defended a Super Bowl win, but anything short of a repeat would represent an underachievement for the Kansas City Chiefs."
If a 2020 season is able to take place, the Chiefs will be the favorites because of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, who have both taken the league by storm the past two seasons. Mahomes might not have won the league MVP last season, but he did one better and that was winning both a Super Bowl title and Super Bowl MVP title.
Throw in that the Chiefs didn’t lose any key offensive playmakers this offseason and they’ll be heading into battle with virtually the same team they had in their Super Bowl winning season. They lost a few players on defense, but for the most part, they’ll look the same as they did when they took the field in Miami for the Super Bowl.
This year’s Super Bowl is in Tampa and the Chiefs will play there late in the regular season, so that should be motivation for them.
It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and if they can win it again this season, they’ll be on their way to becoming the next great NFL dynasty.
