KC Chiefs: Rashad Fenton considered most intriguing project player
The KC Chiefs took Rashad Fenton in the sixth round of last year’s draft and he surprised a lot of people as a rookie in 2019.
Rashad Fenton’s impressive rookie campaign for the Kansas City Chiefs in their Super Bowl winning season is what landed him on Brent Sobleski’s list of every NFL team’s most intriguing prospect player.
"Rashad Fenton, a 2019 sixth-round selection, will likely take on more responsibilities. He didn’t start a game last season, but he showed the ability to play outside the numbers and cover the slot. In fact, he allowed a lower completion percentage (47.1) and quarterback rating (57.7) than Breeland, per Pro Football Reference."
Fenton was a bit of a surprising pick for the Chiefs because most fans expected them to address the cornerback position sooner than the sixth round. Fenton played well at South Carolina, but no one really expected him to be anything more than a depth piece and special teams contributor with the Chiefs, especially early on in his career.

Instead, he played a nice role as a rookie and as Sobleski stated, he had a low completion percentage and low quarterback rating allowed. Not bad for a sixth round rookie!
With Bashaud Breeland more than likely missing a chunk of games at the start of the season, Fenton is going to receive a lot more playing time. He proved he had potential last season as Sobleski mentioned, and that experience should help him develop further.
Sobleski also mentioned that even if Breeland does suit up early in the season, the Chiefs still have a need at cornerback and it’s hard to argue that. They did add some depth through the draft and through free agency, but it feels like year after year, the Chiefs are always looking for cornerback depth.
They were fortunate that both Fenton and 2018 undrafted free agent Charvarius Ward were able to pick up the slack this past season, but 2019 is going to be a big one for Rashad Fenton. If he can step in and prove that his rookie season wasn’t a fluke, the Chiefs very well might have struck gold with him.
That’d be pretty impressive if the KC Chiefs truly could have found a diamond in the rough in the sixth round and 2020 will go a long way to showing what Rashad Fenton can provide for this team long-term.
What do you think, Chiefs fans? Is Rashad Fenton a player to watch moving forward or will he be another depth piece who fizzles in the next few years?
