No one should be surprised that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes came in at number one on CBS Sports’ top ten quarterbacks for the 2020 season.

Sean Wagner-McGough of CBS Sports ranked the top ten quarterbacks heading into 2020 and unsurprisingly Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs was number one on the list.

"Sure, his numbers in the regular season regressed after his record-setting 2018 season, but keep in mind that from 2018 to 2019, he cut his interception rate in half (from 2.1 percent to 1.0 percent). Including the playoffs, Mahomes now owns a higher winning percentage than Tom Brady. If anyone has a chance to unseat Brady as the greatest quarterback of all time, it’s Mahomes. There’s no reason to think he’s set to decline. If anything, like Jackson, I think he’s going to keep getting better."

It’s hard to argue with Wagner-McGough here, as Mahomes is far and away the best quarterback in the league. Yes, Lamar Jackson was the league MVP last year and set the league on fire with his ability to bulldoze over defenders, but when polling just about anyone, they’d all take Mahomes over Jackson (except maybe Ravens fans).

More from Patrick Mahomes

The way Jackson plays doesn’t exactly pave the way for him to have a long career either while Mahomes’ style of play does. Mahomes isn’t a running quarterback and when it comes down to it, he’d much rather throw the football and showcase that explosive arm of his than to try and run for a few yards, taking a shot in the process.

As long as the Kansas City Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, they have a chance to win a Super Bowl, even after they pay him the contract he’s more  than deserving of. He’s been the reason they’ve made it to back to back AFC Championship Games and he’s helped the Chiefs go from playoff contender to Super Bowl contender ever since he took the reins full-time in 2018.

As for the rest of Wagner-McGough’s list, Jackson came in at number two, which isn’t shocking considering he was amazing last season. He’s still young too, so that rushing ability is still prominent for him.

Rounding out the top five was Russell Wilson, Drew Brees, and Dak Prescott. Wilson has yet to miss a start since entering the league in 2012 and is still a tremendous quarterback. Brees is nearing the end of his career, but still is one of the best in the game while Prescott has only gotten better since being a fourth round pick in 2016.

Six through ten on the list were Deshaun Watson, Matthew Stafford, Carson Wentz, Tom Brady, and Ben Roethlisberger. Watson should be swapped with Prescott, as he’s a phenomenal player. Stafford appearing on this list is a little surprising, but he has to show the Lions something this year or he could be playing elsewhere in 2021.

Wentz is a good player, but is way too injury prone. Brady could turn the Bucs from irrelevant to relevant overnight and Big Ben is probably getting close to retiring, but he’s still shown he can compete at the highest level.
