Asa Lacy was the pick for the Kansas City Royals at number four overall in the 2020 MLB Draft.

What a dream scenario for the Kansas City Royals in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft!

The first round began on Wednesday evening and, as expected, Spencer Torkelson went off the board first to the Detroit Tigers. Next, the Baltimore Orioles did not go with Austin Martin as many expected  them to. The Marlins also passed on some of the perceived top talent, which played out well for the Royals.

Now the Royals had their choice of Martin or Asa Lacy, two guys who were seemingly locked in as the second and third picks of the draft and ultimately, they went with Asa Lacy of Texas A&M.

This is a really exciting pick for the Royals and it’s shocking that he made it to the fourth pick. The analysts on MLB Network mentioned that he was the best left-handed pitcher in this draft and now he’s going to be in the Royals’ farm system.

More from Kansas City Royals

Lacy finished his shortened 2020 season with the Aggies posting a 0.75 ERA in four starts and 24 innings. He’ll definitely be one of the Royals’ top prospects and hopefully should be able to make it to the majors in 2022. He could very well be their number one pitcher in the future and is going to be a lot of fun to watch in the coming years.

The Royals have put a strong emphasis on college pitchers in the last few years, having taken Brady Singer and four other college pitchers with their first five picks in the 2018 MLB Draft. All five of those pitchers could end up being pivotal for the Royals in their next run to contention. Lacy is yet another addition to that group of pitchers and it’s very clear they’re focusing on arms for their next run.

This was an absolute dream scenario for the Kansas City Royals, who had mostly been linked to Nick Gonzales throughout the mock draft process. When the Orioles took Heston Kjerstad at number two overall, that’s when it was a sure thing for the Royals to land either Lacy or Martin. They went with the best left-handed pitcher in the draft.

The Royals have another pick later in the first round (a supplemental pick) so they’re not done for the night, but for now, this is a very exciting selection and Royals fans should be really excited to watch Lacy work his way up the minor league ladder!
