How did the Kansas City Chiefs’ final game of the 2011 season play out?

The 2011 season truly was a rollercoaster for the Kansas City Chiefs, who went on so many different type of streaks whether it was winning or losing streaks. By the regular season finale, the Chiefs were 6-9 and their playoff hopes were over.

Their final opponent of the season, however, were still trying to fight their way into the postseason. That opponent was the Broncos, who were 8-7 and were still in contention for the playoffs in the final game of the season.

What followed in this game was one of the worst games in Chiefs history… even if it did end in a W.

The Chiefs got to ring in the New Year by hosting the Broncos in the final game of the 2011 season. The Broncos had a lot at stake in this one, as a win would punch their ticket to the playoffs. If they lost, they still had hope, but would need some help from other teams in the league.

This was the infamous 7-3 final between the two teams where the one and only Tim Tebow completed just six passes for 60 yards. Meanwhile, the Chiefs could barely put anything together either hence the final score.

The only touchdown of the day was courtesy of the Chiefs who scored on 21-yard run by Dexter McCluster at the end of the first quarter. Little did Chiefs fans know that would be it for the Chiefs offense that day.

The Broncos finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Matt Prater kicked a 38-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game. That ended up being the final score.

There really isn’t much to report on this game because nothing happened. How a quarterback could throw 22 passes and only complete just six of them is wild. Tebow was an intriguing player, but this was one of the worst performances by a quarterback any of us had ever seen.

With the win, the Kansas City Chiefs finished the year at 7-9 while the Broncos were right at .500 at 8-8. That was enough for them to win the AFC West and they actually won a playoff game (that crazy Tebow throw in overtime against the Steelers).

Key Stats

This game might have resulted in a Chiefs victory, but oof was it an ugly one. Had Tebow even been able to complete a few more passes, this could have easily gone the other way.

The 2011 season ended with a win, but for the most part, it was a disappointing season. The Chiefs battled back from 0-3 to move to 4-3 and then lost four straight games. After a blowout loss to the Jets, Todd Haley was fired as the head coach and Romeo Crennel took over as interim head coach.

Crennel’s efforts did enough for him to earn the job for the 2012 season and uh – Well, we all know how that panned out and it wasn’t good.

Boy, that 2011 season sure was a weird one. It’s crazy to think that the Chiefs were really just an overtime loss from making the playoffs that year (that came in week 16 against the Raiders). This team wouldn’t have done well in the playoffs that year because the playoff curse was still in full effect at that point, but it’d have been better than the 7-9 finish.
