The 2020 MLB Draft begins on Wednesday and the Kansas City Royals have the fourth overall pick, which they should spend on infielder Nick Gonzales.

Nick Gonzales is someone who has been linked to the Kansas City Royals throughout mock draft season and he’d be a nice selection for them at pick number four.

Unlike Asa Lacy, Gonzales should be available with the fourth overall pick and if he is, it might be hard for the Royals to pass up on him. The kid put up monster numbers at New Mexico State and while there are arguments to be had about the conference he played in, there’s no debating that Gonzales is talented.

Why Nick Gonzales would be a smart pick for the Kansas City Royals

More from Kansas City Royals

Gonzales was straight up crushing the ball during the 2020 season with a .448/.610/.1.155 slash line, 12 home runs, and 36 RBI while also swiping four bags. His versatility is something that could also attract the Royals to him, as he played both second base and shortstop during his time at New Mexico State.

Gonzales actually spent 2019 at second base and was playing mostly at shortstop in 2020. While Nicky Lopez is still young, the Royals will have some time to decide if he’s the guy they want at second base for the foreseeable future while Gonzales is still polishing things up in the minor leagues.

If nothing else though, perhaps the Royals would opt to have Gonzales play first base or one of the outfield positions. It wouldn’t be a bad problem to have by any means, but he’d be at his best as a second baseman.

If Gonzales was the pick at fourth overall, he’d be the Royals’ second best prospect behind Bobby Witt Jr. and it’s entirely possible that those two could be the key infielders for the Royals for the next decade. Gonzales might be able to earn a call-up to the big leagues sometime during the 2022 season, which is hopefully around when the Royals’ resurgence would begin.

The Kansas City Royals have been linked to Nick Gonzales in a lot of mock drafts and there’s a very real possibility that he’s the guy taken with the fourth overall pick. The Royals could use a bat like his and that’ll be the key to his success in the major leagues.

He’s not bad defensively and it’s something that can definitely be taught to him, but when it comes down to it, he’ll be one of the Royals’ best hitters and could even be the best second basemen in all of Major League Baseball.

If Nick Gonzales is the pick at fourth overall for the Kansas City Royals, then fans should be thrilled.
