Prospects at pick four for Kansas City Royals: Nick Gonzales, Second Base

Nick Gonzales is the second-best available option for the Royals at number four. In my Mock Draft 1.0, I had this to say about Gonzales and his potential future with the Royals:

"Gonzales was putting up video game numbers before the 2020 NCAA season was cancelled. His success in 2019 both at the NCAA level and the Cape Cod league project Gonzales favorably as an offensive force. In the video I’ve seen of Gonzales, I liked the short-compact swing, the pitch selection, and he shows he’s solid making defensive plays to his backhand."

Gonzales is an elite hitter, capable of being the best overall hitting prospect available in the draft. His defensive ability and where he played his college baseball are what is holding him back from being drafted first or second.

The best possible outlook on Gonzales defensively is he becomes an average fielder at second base. Defense can be taught and work ethic can go a long way at improving defense at the MLB level.

Gonzales has outstanding work ethic and his bat is special, so if he’s available at number four overall the Royals could be getting themselves one of the better second basemen in the league for the next decade.

Gonzales projects to be a high ceiling/high floor-type prospect with the work ethic to exceed his ceiling projections.
