Kansas City Royals: Best Fourth Overall Picks

. Outfielder. San Diego Padres. Dave Winfield. 2. player. 127

The Padres made Dave Winfield the fourth overall pick in the 1973 MLB Draft and what followed was a 22-year Hall of Fame career. Winfield spent the first eight years of his career with the Padres, making his MLB debut at age 21.

Winfield was good with the Padres, but he saw most of his success with the Yankees, which is where he made it to eight of his 12 All-Star games. Winfield was an All-Star in every season from 1977-1988, but it wasn’t until 1992 when he won his first and only World Series, which came with the Blue Jays.

Along with the 12 All-Star appearances and World Series title, Winfield also was a seven-time Gold Glove recipient and six time Silver Slugger winner. He played for six different teams during his 22-year career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

61. . Shortstop. Cincinnati Reds. Barry Larkin. 1. player

The best fourth overall pick in MLB history is Barry Larkin, who spent the entirety of his 19-year career with the Cincinnati Reds, the same team who drafted him. Larkin had quite the career, finishing with an average slash line of .295/.371/.444, 198 home runs, and 960 RBI.

Larkin was a 12-time All-Star and won the NL MVP in 1995 after he batted .319. He also was a nine-time Silver Slugger as well as three-time Gold Glove recipient.

Larkin helped lead the Reds to a World Series title in 1990 and batted .353 during that series. The Reds made it to the World Series in 1995 as well (Larkin’s MVP season), but they came up short in that one despite Larkin batting .389 in the series.

Barry Larkin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012 and is the best fourth overall pick in MLB history.

Obviously if the Kansas City Royals could land a player of any of these guys’ caliber, they should be thrilled. They’ve been linked to several different players in the 2020 MLB Draft and if a team is able to land a top five pick in the draft, they can’t make a mistake with who they take because that player HAS to be an impact player for them.

The Royals were able to get to the World Series in back to back years in 2014 and 2015 due to their strong first round drafting in the mid to late 2000s and that’ll be key again this go around. Hopefully they land the next Barry Larkin or Dave Winfield and somehow can find a way to keep him around for the entirety of his career.
