Jadeveon Clowney joining KC Chiefs would put defense over the top

The KC Chiefs’ defense improved greatly in 2019 – so much that it helped pave the way for them to win Super Bowl LIV. Imagine that same defense with Jadeveon Clowney.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been fortunate not to lose many of their starters from their Super Bowl winning roster and as a result, weren’t forced to go after the big name free agents. Let’s pretend for a minute, no matter how unrealistic this is, that they somehow landed Jadeveon Clowney. That would make both their offense and their defense top tier.

Clowney was the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Texans and it took him some time to get going. He struggled with injuries early on in his career and was inconsistent because of that. In 2017 and 2018, however, Clowney turned things around, notching at least nine sacks in each of those two seasons.

Clowney spent the 2019 season in Seattle and despite not having as dominant of a season, he still accounted for 31 tackles and three sacks through 13 regular season games. He’s still waiting to be signed by a team at the moment and the KC Chiefs honestly have about as good a shot at landing him as the Jaguars do at winning the Super Bowl in 2020, but let’s pretend that’s not the case.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

If Clowney joined the Chiefs, he’d join the likes of Frank Clark, Chris Jones, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Derrick Nnadi, Alex Okafor, Mike Pennel, and Breeland Speaks up front in 2020. Clark and Jones were absolute wrecking balls last season, but under the radar players like Kpassagnon and Pennel stepped up and made big plays when needed. Throw Clowney into that mix and it’s game over for opposing offenses.

When considering that the Chiefs already have an explosive offense that’s tough to stop, just imagine if they had a defense that could match that. They’d be able to put up a lot of points offensively and prevent opponents from scoring much at all. It’d be blowout central for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Clowney isn’t going to sign with Kansas City and the biggest reason why is that they don’t have the money he’s asking for. The guy turned down a big offer from the Browns (the numbers of that deal haven’t been revealed), so that’s a pretty good indicator that he isn’t going to take less to play for the Chiefs, even if they are the reigning Super Bowl champions.

It’s a pipe dream, sure, but it’s still fun to imagine Jadeveon Clowney as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs defense.
