Continuing on with Kansas City Chiefs UDFAs and what they could provide as rookies, Javaris Davis is next up and he happens to play at a position that’s always of need for the Chiefs.

It doesn’t matter what year it is, the Kansas City Chiefs will have a need at cornerback no matter what. That’s what happens when the league has become as pass-happy as it currently is, but the Chiefs also don’t really have any lockdown corners and haven’t in several years.

Heading into 2020, the Chiefs likely were looking at a starting unit of Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward with Antonio Hamilton and Rashad Fenton helping out. Breeland is probably going to serve a suspension to start the season and that opens things up for a drafted cornerback or even a UDFA cornerback to find their way onto the field during the regular season.

Javaris Davis is one of those corners who could make the team. He’ll have to compete with 2020 NFL Draft picks L’Jarius Sneed and BoPete Keyes as well as fellow UDFA Lavert Hill. With the strong need at corner, it’s not unfathomable for Davis to make the roster whatsoever.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Davis spent his college career with the Auburn Tigers and something that stands out when looking at his stats is that he hauled in two interceptions in every season he played. His tackles and passes defensed were consistent throughout his collegiate career and Davis is definitely someone who could make a splash in the NFL.

Realistically, Davis probably starts the season on the practice squad unless he has an insanely good training camp and preseason (assuming those two things go on as scheduled). From there, his path to the Chiefs roster will depend on injuries and how the rest of the corners play.

If Davis were to make the roster, it’d take a few injuries for him to earn some defensive snaps, but he could definitely see the field on special teams if nothing else. Most UDFAs’ ceiling is special teams, but with cornerback being such an important position for the Chiefs, Davis has a chance to make the absolute most of his rookie season.

Keep an eye on Javaris Davis because he could be a surprising player for the Kansas City Chiefs.

What expectations do you have for Javaris Davis as a rookie in 2020? Do you think he could find his way onto the field or is he destined for the practice squad?
