The KC Chiefs signed Hakeem Bailey as an undrafted free agent. What could the cornerback out of West Virginia provide during his rookie season?

Making the final roster as an undrafted free agent isn’t easy, but it’s doable for sure. That’s what West Virginia cornerback Hakeem Bailey will look to do this offseason. Will he be able to make an impact for the Kansas City Chiefs?

Fortunately for Bailey, cornerback is a position that can use as much depth as possible. That’s the case in most offseasons, but this year it’s especially the case, as Bashaud Breeland is surely going to miss some time due to suspension. With Breeland unavailable, that’ll put the pressure on Charvarius Ward (an undrafted free agent himself) and last year’s sixth round pick Rashad Fenton to carry the load.

Losing Kendall Fuller will hurt the cornerback position, but retaining Breeland helped (even if he will miss some time). The Chiefs also drafted L’Jarius Sneed and Thakarius Keyes who will probably get the call at corner before someone like Bailey.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Bailey recorded 58 tackles, nine passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble, and one sack in his final season with the Mountaineers in the “defense is optional” Big 12 Conference. His stats aren’t necessarily eye popping, but they do show that he was able to do a variety of things whether it was stripping the football or taking the football together completely as well as getting after the quarterback.

Truth be told, the UDFAs who have the best shot to contribute on the roster are any of the cornerbacks. While Bailey probably isn’t the biggest name at that position, he certainly has a shot to make the team.

While it’ll be an uphill battle for the West Virginia Mountaineer, if he’s able to impress this summer (or whenever the position battles can take place) and make the roster, then he could see time as a depth piece in the secondary. He’d also be able to make a splash on special teams.

While Hakeem Bailey probably isn’t going to be a big time player as a rookie, if he is able to make an impression this summer and get onto the team, he’ll either be a depth/special teams piece or he’ll spend his rookie season on the practice squad.
