The Kansas City Royals hold the fourth overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and in the most recent mock draft, they’ve been linked to Nick Gonzales.

Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com published his most recent MLB mock draft and had the Kansas City Royals going with New Mexico State second baseman Nick Gonzales, who would be a nice addition to their infield.

Here is what Mayo had to say,

"The Royals could add to their impressive stable of arms by taking Georgia’s Emerson Hancock here, but there’s been talk of them looking at high school outfielder Zac Veen and Gonzales here. This week, I’m going with them taking the more advanced bat in Gonzales, who could reach Kansas City and join those pitchers quickly."

For those of you who read Cody Rickman’s Royals articles, you’ll know that he’s been high on Gonzales since before the college season was even set to start. In his first mock draft that published on KC Kingdom two weeks ago, Rickman had the Royals selecting Gonzales fourth overall as well.

"Gonzales was putting up video game numbers before the 2020 NCAA season was cancelled. His success in 2019 both at the NCAA level and the Cape Cod league project Gonzales favorably as an offensive force."

The 2020 college season getting canceled isn’t going to stop Gonzales from being a top five pick and if he’s there at pick number four, the Royals would probably be stoked and wouldn’t hesitate to draft him. Even though he’s listed as a second baseman, that’s not necessarily where the Royals would play him at.

Mayo mentioned that Gonzales could reach Kansas City quickly and if that’s the case, there’d almost be more of a case to slot him in at either first or third base, as both second base and shortstop are occupied right now by Nicky Lopez and Adalberto Mondesi respectively.

Mayo also noted who else the Royals could be interested in at pick number four, mentioning Emerson Hancock. The Royals really fixated on pitching two years ago, but having too many talented pitchers is never a bad thing.

Gonzales would provide Kansas City with a near MLB-ready infielder who could potentially provide them long-term insurance. Lopez still needs to prove himself at second base, but there’s no guarantee he’s the long-term answer there. Mondesi has the ability to be the shortstop of the future, but if his price tag is too much, maybe Gonzales could find his way at shortstop.
