The Kansas City Chiefs traded into the seventh round to nab BoPete Keyes instead of risk losing him in the undrafted free agent pool. What can fans expect from the Tulane standout during his rookie season?

After the first five rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft were in the books, the Kansas City Chiefs were finished for the weekend as far as draft picks went. Or so we all thought.

When the draft was nearing the end, the Chiefs shocked everyone by trading into the seventh round and spending the 237th pick on Tulane cornerback BoPete Keyes. It was a move that was surprising, as they traded their 2021 sixth rounder to the Titans in order to select Keyes.

Making a trade is always big, so considering the Chiefs surrendered a sixth rounder in next year’s draft to land Keyes, what should Chiefs fans expect from him in 2020?

The simple answer is that he probably won’t be a big role player as a rookie. He might see the field a little more than initially planned with Bashaud Breeland likely getting suspended, but otherwise Keyes is probably going to be a depth piece and special teams player.

That’s okay though! The Chiefs got great value with this pick. Getting Keyes in the fourth round would have been an incredible value, so the fact that they got him in the seventh round? Incredible value and Keyes could go down as one of the biggest steals of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Keyes could end up seeing more playing time if injuries occur however. I already mentioned the potential Breeland suspension, but injuries are sure to occur, especially at a position like cornerback.

The Chiefs always have a need at the cornerback spot (if Breeland misses time, Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton will be the two main corners more than likely) and Keyes has a chance to make a name for himself early on if Breeland does indeed get suspended.

His appearances in those games will go a long way in determining how big the rest of his rookie season will be. Will he continue to see plenty of snaps or will he be a depth piece and special teams player throughout his first year in the pros?
