KC Chiefs fans saw how important it was to have a viable backup quarterback in the 2019 season and that’s why Chad Henne should be the backup to Patrick Mahomes in 2020.

In week seven of the 2019 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were playing the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football when Patrick Mahomes was injured on a quarterback sneak. In the moment, Chiefs fans feared the worst – Their season was likely over because Mahomes was who carried this team in 2018 and to that point in 2019.

The worst didn’t happen, as Mahomes was okay, but had to miss the next two games. That paved the way for backup quarterback Matt Moore to step in and he executed beautifully, going 1-1 and honestly should have been 2-0.

Moore isn’t on the team this year, as the Chiefs went with their initial backup quarterback Chad Henne, who should be the backup in 2020 over unknown Jordan Ta’amu and UDFA Shea Patterson.

Henne might not be anything more than a backup, but players like him are fine with that role. He’s fine stepping in for a few games and doing the bare minimum until Mahomes is able to return to action.

What might make some fans skeptical is that we haven’t seen Henne in action since he’s been a Chief aside from preseason games. He threw just three passes in 2018 and was injured in 2019 (which is why Moore was the backup), so fans haven’t seen him in a meaningful regular season game since he was Jacksonville’s starter in 2014.

That being said, Henne is the best option to sit behind Mahomes in 2020. While I like what Ta’amu can provide for the future, he still needs some fine tuning before he’d be a suitable backup. KC Kingdom’s own Kole Berrey discussed how Ta’amu could be a nice long-term backup and we both agree that Henne is the right option for 2020.

Obviously the hope is that the Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to turn to their backup quarterback at any point during the 2020 season (except for a lopsided game), but you never know when disaster is going to strike. The Chiefs were left for dead when Mahomes went down in 2019, but Matt Moore stepped in, and did what he needed to do to keep the Chiefs afloat.

Henne wouldn’t have to come in and be what Mahomes is because he’s not that guy. Henne is someone who will make safe throws, protect the football, and be the definition of what a backup quarterback is. There’s nothing wrong with being the QB2 and his experience alone is why Chad Henne should have that role in 2020.
