The Kansas City Chiefs open up the 2020 season (or the “Run It Back” tour as we’ll be referring to it as) with a home game against the Houston Texans. The NFL nailed this season opener.

It’s tradition (in most seasons anyway) for the reigning Super Bowl champion to open up the season and the Kansas City Chiefs will continue this tradition. They’re scheduled to open the 2020 NFL season against the Houston Texans on Thursday, September 10th.

While we’re still uncertain if fans will be allowed to attend the game (therefore likely delaying the raising of the Super Bowl LIV banner), this is still an excellent match-up to open the NFL season.

Let’s start with the significance of this game.

The Chiefs met up with the Texans in the AFC Divisional Round in January after Houston narrowly defeated the Bills one week prior. The Texans rolled early against the Chiefs, getting off to a 24-0 start before most of Chiefs Kingdom could even blink.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

It looked like this would once again be another early Chiefs playoff exit, but this team was never down and out in the 2019 season. After that atrocious start, the Chiefs went on to score 28 unanswered points and actually LED at half time.

When it was all said and done, the Chiefs – who were getting blown out after one quarter of play – had blown out the Texans. It was unreal. This game opening the season is going to be a nightmare for Texans fans, who will likely be subjected to watching highlights of that Divisional Round battle all night long.

This was the best option for the NFL when it came to Chiefs’ home games because let’s face it – The home slate isn’t all that great this year. New England probably would have been chosen, but they lost their quarterback of 20 years and therefore don’t bring the same excitement level they once had (despite getting five primetime games).

Chiefs vs Texans was an obvious choice, not only because of the AFC Divisional Round rematch, but because it pits two of the bright young stars in the league against each other. Those would be Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, of course, who were both taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and have been so exciting to watch in their three years in the league.

Even though the Chiefs are HEAVY favorites heading into this game, it was only three years ago when the Chiefs traveled to Foxborough to open the season against the then-reigning champion Patriots. and stunned the football world by beating the snot out of them.

While I doubt that happens here (especially the blowout part – The Chiefs haven’t been blown out in the Mahomes era), anything is possible in the NFL. That’s why they play the game.

Hopefully fans are able to safely attend the home opener, but even if they can’t, this looks to be a memorable season opener for both Kansas City Chiefs fans and for the rest of the league.
