The Kansas City Chiefs brought in another quarterback this week and his name is Shea Patterson. What impact does Patterson being signed have on this team?

When it comes to the quarterback position, the Kansas City Chiefs have it as good as any team in the National Football League. Patrick Mahomes is only 24 years and has already won a Super Bowl, an MVP award, and a Super Bowl MVP award. Simply put – He’s amazing.

The only question that Chiefs fans now have when it comes to the quarterback position is who is going to back up Mahomes?

As of two weeks ago, it was between Chad Henne, XFL star Jordan Ta’amu, and undrafted wonder Kyle Shurmur, but Shurmur was released, narrowing it down to Henne and Ta’amu. I wrote not long ago about how the Chiefs like to have four quarterbacks on their roster heading into the preseason and how with Shurmur gone, the Chiefs were probably going to bring someone else in.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Well, they did and the newest Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is Shea Patterson, formerly of Ole Miss and Michigan football.

To be perfectly honest, Patterson really doesn’t have much of a chance to make the Chiefs’ roster and was likely only brought in for quarterback depth this summer. He’s not beating up Henne and Ta’amu for the backup job and will probably be relegated to the practice squad for his rookie season.

Patterson did show potential in his four-year collegiate career – which was split between Ole Miss (2016 and 2017) and Michigan (2018 and 2019). Patterson spent time at Ole Miss with Ta’amu actually, which I doubt plays any sort of a factor into why he’s with the Chiefs now, but it’s still a fun fact.

Patterson’s best season came as a senior at Michigan where he threw for 3,061 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while rushing for another five touchdowns. Patterson didn’t make a ton of plays with his legs, but he was able to use them to find the end zone.

Henne appears the most likely option to serve as the QB2 in 2020, but he’ll be 35 years old when the season begins and isn’t a long-term backup. Kole Berrey wrote about how Jordan Ta’amu could be the long-term backup to Mahomes and that’s something that fans would like to see.

Perhaps Patterson makes a huge splash this summer and can find his way onto the roster, but more than likely, he’s simply a depth piece heading into the summer activities.
