Chiefs News: Three things to know about L’Jarius Sneed
Chiefs news still surrounds fans getting to know the newest members of the Kansas City Chiefs. Let’s wrap up our series with three things Chiefs Kingdom should know about L’Jarius Sneed.
The Kansas City Chiefs spent the 138th overall pick on safety L’Jarius Sneed out of Louisiana Tech. He was their fourth round draft choice and is a very versatile player, which seemed to be the focus of this draft.
Let’s dive right in with three things fans should know about the team’s newest defensive back.
HAS EXPERIENCE AT SAFETY AND CORNER
Sneed spent the first three years of his collegiate career playing the cornerback position. It wasn’t until his senior year that he switched to safety and even though he was drafted as a safety, the draft analysts mentioned when the Chiefs selected him that he’d probably be used as a press corner in this defense.
Sneed fills a huge area of need, as last year fans saw Kendall Fuller go from only playing corner to then playing a little bit of safety and corner. With Fuller off to our nation’s capital, Sneed can potentially come in and fill the role of playing both positions admirably. He might not be ready to do so as a rookie, but that should be the game plan with him.
BLAZING FAST
One of the first things that was said about Sneed when he was selected was how fast he was and when researching him a little more – Yeah, the guy can fly out fly.

His 40-time at the NFL Combine was 4.37, which is pretty freaking fast. Sneed will need that speed to keep up with some of the quick receivers the rest of the AFC West picked up in this year’s draft, so hopefully he can become an effective defender so the Chiefs have someone capable of keeping up with those guys.
TURNOVER MACHINE
The Chiefs need defensive players who can force turnovers and L’Jarius Sneed can be that guy. In his final two years at Louisiana Tech, Sneed had a total of six interceptions and took two of them back the other way for six points. That’s exactly what the Chiefs want on their defense – Someone who can force takeaways and get points out of it.

While L’Jarius Sneed might have been a bit of a surprising pick to some, it appears he’ll be used more in a cornerback role rather than his drafted position of safety. Perhaps over time he can transition into playing a bit of both a la Fuller, but for now, if he can nail one position, that’d be great.
