Special Teams (3)

Kicker: Harrison Butker
Punter: Tommy Townsend
Long Snapper: James Winchester

The competition to watch here is the punter competition. With franchise great Dustin Colquitt out of the picture, that leaves the punter spot a wide-open competition between Tommy Townsend and Tyler Newsome.

I’m not going to lie, I am rooting for Newsome because I am a Notre Dame fan and he has much better hair, but Townsend has the better leg and edges him out for the spot on the active roster. rr

Practice Squad/IR (16)

Tyler Newsome (P), Greg Senat (OL), Jovahn Fair (OL), Marcus Marshall (RB), Mike Weber (RB), John Lovett (FB), Nick Keizer (TE), Felton Davis (WR), Andre Baccellia (WR), Kalija Lipscomb (WR), Michael Danna (DE), Tim Ward (DE), Emmanuel Smith (LB), Lavert Hill (CB), Alex Brown (CB), Javaris Davis (CB)

Obviously only 12 of these can actually make the practice squad, but there are always the mysterious injured reserve designations to keep players around (i.e. Tim Ward last season).

More from Kansas City Chiefs

These 16 players are the guys who have a shot at the practice squad right now. There’s still a lot that I don’t know about this group yet, however, and they haven’t even touched the field yet so this list is bound to change.

Recap

There weren’t a lot of tough cuts so far in my first 55-man roster (still so weird!) predictions. I did let go of Austin Reiter – who was a starter last season – and also let go of Darrel Williams and Gehrig Dieter, who many people in Chiefs Kingdom like a lot. I see a lot of changes to the roster this season, but as a whole not a whole lot of difficult cuts on the horizon.

Nevertheless, this will be another training camp with a lot of intense position battles to watch for. Try to make it over to Missouri Western this year to watch some of these positions take shape in person (assuming that it is open to the public at some point). It really is a good time if you have a chance to make it over to training camp!
