The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books and the KC Chiefs added a running back in the first round – Clyde Edwards-Helaire out of LSU. How does this shake up their running back depth chart for the 2020 season?

While the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl last season, there were still weaknesses on the team. Running back was one of those weaknesses, especially throughout the course of the regular season.

The Chiefs are most definitely a pass-first kind of team, but that doesn’t mean they can’t try to improve their run game. They did that in the 2020 NFL Draft by selecting LSU’s Clyde Edwards- Helaire with the 32nd overall pick.

Fans might have been upset with the team spending a first round pick on a running back, but they held the final pick in round one, so it didn’t bother me as much. Plus, Edwards-Helaire can be a major contributor from day one.

Let’s take a look at how the Chiefs depth chart could look come opening weekend in the 2020 season:

More from Kansas City Chiefs

  1. Damien Williams
  2. Clyde Edwards-Helaire
  3. DeAndre Washington
  4. Darwin Thompson
  5. Darrel Williams

Damien Williams being the RB1 entering the season is a no-brainer. Yes, the Chiefs took CEH with their first round pick, but he won’t be the guy right away. Williams could have won Super Bowl MVP and he deserves to be the starter.

The issue with Williams, however, is that he’s both inconsistent and injury prone. If he goes down with an injury, then Clyde Edwards-Helaire should have every opportunity to jump him on the depth chart and keep the job moving forward.

He’ll be the RB2 because the Chiefs didn’t draft him for him to sit on the sidelines and watch, so while he won’t be the starter from the get-go, he will be utilized frequently and has a strong chance to become the starter as the season progresses.

The other three running backs are coin flips honestly for where they could fall on the depth chart. I put DeAndre Washington at three because the team signed him for a reason and he saw some productive seasons with the Raiders. He’d be a nice option to sprinkle in there every now and then.

Darwin Thompson and Darrel Williams had chances to show something in 2019, but Darrel was injured and Thompson didn’t do as much as a rookie as many thought he would. That being said, the team did spend a sixth round pick on him last year, so he gets the edge over Darrel.
