KC Chiefs: Quarterback depth chart after 2020 NFL Draft
The 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone and the KC Chiefs, unsurprisingly, decided not to draft a quarterback. How does the quarterback position look after the events of the draft?
With just five picks heading into the 2020 NFL Draft, not many fans expected the Kansas City Chiefs to select a quarterback with one of those picks. That’s because the team didn’t need to add anymore. They have their franchise signal caller and have two guys who can compete to back him up in 2020.
Let’s take a look at the guys on the roster at the quarterback spot:
- Patrick Mahomes
- Chad Henne
- Jordan Ta’amu
The only true debate at the quarterback position this offseason is who is going to win the backup job. Mahomes is the starter and unless there’s an injury or something bizarre occurs, that isn’t changing.

The Chiefs had to make a decision on who to bring back between Henne and last season’s backup Matt Moore and they chose the former even with Moore arguably saving Kansas City’s season when Mahomes missed time. Henne was the backup in 2018 though, so keeping him wasn’t a bad move by any means.
Ta’amu signed after playing five games with the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL. He was effective as both a passer and a runner and while he might not win the QB2 job, don’t be surprised if Andy Reid opts to keep him on the roster and use him in a number of different ways (a la Taysom Hill).
KC more than likely will bring in yet another quarterback prior to the start of the season because they’ve carried four throughout the previous the past few years. They cut Kyle Shurmur earlier this week, which was a bit of a stunner, as it appeared the organization was fond of him. He wasn’t going to be the answer as the starter obviously, but spending time behind Mahomes as his backup wasn’t out of the question.
Quarterback won’t be a very intriguing position battle this summer because all three guys are going to make the team and probably the roster as well. Ta’amu would interest other teams if placed on the practice squad, so expect him to be one of the 53 guys on the final roster come regular season.
Will the KC Chiefs add another quarterback between now and when preseason games are played or will they stand pat with these three players?
