The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t able to re-sign Emmanuel Ogbah this offseason, as he signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins. How can the Chiefs go about replacing him in 2020?

One of the more surprising players for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 was Emmanuel Ogbah, who they team acquired in a trade with the Browns. Ogbah didn’t wow in Cleveland, but he played well in ten games and four starts for Kansas City.

Ogbah totaled five and a half sacks in his ten games and looked to be on his way to having a breakout season in Kansas City. He still had a nice 2019 campaign and obviously the Dolphins thought so too, offering him a contract and bolstering their defense in the process.

With Emmanuel Ogbah now off to Miami on a two-year deal, how will the Chiefs replace him?

While Ogbah leaving is unfortunate, one of the big things to note with him is that as good as he was, after he was injured in the game against the Titans, the Chiefs defense actually started to improve. Now that’s not to say that Ogbah’s injury is why they improved, but more of that the defense didn’t have him for the final three months of their 2019 campaign and still won the Super Bowl.

Once Ogbah went down, it allowed Tanoh Kpassagnon to get into the game more. That’ll continue to be a strategy the Chiefs use, especially with 2020 being the final year of Kpassagnon’s rookie deal.

Kansas City will also have Alex Okafor back in 2020 who will help out on defense. Okafor played in ten games and started nine of them before getting hurt in the week 15 game against Denver and missing the rest of the season.

The Chiefs probably won’t draft along the defensive line, as they have bigger needs like at linebacker, cornerback, and offensive line. It’s also been said that the Chiefs aren’t looking to trade Chris Jones, meaning they’ll be even less in the market for a defensive end in the draft unless they opt to go best available.

Losing Emmanuel Ogbah hurts, especially since he revived his career in Kansas City, but the defense actually got better without him. Kpassagnon and Breeland Speaks – who should be returning in 2020 – will get opportunities to see the field with Ogbah gone.
