KC Chiefs news surrounds how the team only has $177 in cap space, the lowest amount of cap space fo any team in the league.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world, as moves will be made to clear up cap space for the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, it’s remarkable how well the team has been able to do this offseason and come so close to going over the cap.

The Chiefs still have decisions to make when it comes to the future of Chris Jones and what kind of contract Patrick Mahomes will merit. Jones has been franchise tagged, but that doesn’t guarantee him a spot on the team come the season opener.

Kansas City could still opt to trade Jones if someone is interested in taking him and giving up first round picks to do so. It’d be surprising if they did indeed sign him to the kind of money he’s looking for, as they’ve spent big money on core players already and still have to pay Mahomes.

Extending Mahomes could help create more cap space, however, as could extending Travis Kelce or restructuring his deal. Restructuring contracts might be priority for the Chiefs and the team will need more money in order to sign their draft picks in the next two months.

"The cap space situation obviously won’t stay this way, because the Chiefs need around $5 million in order to pay their selections in the 2020 NFL draft.  However, it’s interesting to see how Brandt Tilis and Chris Shea (the guys who handle the salary cap for the Chiefs) have been able to stretch the cap space in Kansas City to the limit."

The article from Charles Goldman of Chiefs Wire was particularly useful and is one I’d highly recommend for those of you wanting insightful information on the Kansas City Chiefs’ cap situation.

This is a bizarre situation, but as mentioned earlier in the article, it won’t stay this way and there are fixes to give the team more flexibility in cap space. Moves will have to be made, especially before it comes time to pay the future Chiefs draft selections who will join the team in April.

While the Chiefs have the least amount of cap space in the league, they are the reigning Super Bowl champions and their moves the past few seasons clearly paid off (literally). The KC Chiefs have shown they know what they’re doing, so trust them this offseason even if things seem a bit odd.
