The Kansas City Chiefs scooped up John Lovett of Princeton after the 2019 NFL Draft and while he didn’t play a single snap during the course of the regular season, he could be a bigger part of the offense in 2020.

A name that Kansas City Chiefs fans were excited about last summer was John Lovett, a utility player out of Princeton. Lovett spent time as a quarterback at Princeton, but he was listed as an athlete when the Chiefs picked him up after the 2019 draft concluded.

The speculation heading into the 2019 season was that Lovett was going to be utilized in different ways on offense. While he’s listed as a fullback on the Chiefs roster, perhaps Lovett could be slotted in as a tight end for the 2020 season.

This would be a smart move for the Chiefs too, as they’re without a true backup tight end at the moment. Travis Kelce is fantastic and the best at the tight end position, but there needs to be depth behind him. Blake Bell is off to Dallas and the only other tight ends on KC’s roster are Nick Keizer and Deon Yelder.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

While I’m still a huge advocate of the Chiefs drafting a tight end, Lovett could be an intriguing option at the position. It’s unlikely he spends any time at fullback due to the team re-signing Anthony Sherman, so tight end seems like the best spot for Lovett.

The Princeton product was quite the runner in his collegiate days, rushing for 894 yards and 13 touchdowns in the 2018 season. He wasn’t used much in the receiving game, but that could change with Andy Reid at the helm.

Lovett missed all of the 2019 season due to injury and he was placed on injured reserved as a result. The Chiefs didn’t necessarily miss him in the receiving game, but with Sammy Watkins‘ future up in the air and Demarcus Robinson likely heading to another team, now is the time to find out what the Chiefs can get out of some of their roster players and Lovett is someone the team seemed high on.

If the Chiefs do draft a tight end, then Lovett could become a Taysom Hill kind of player for Kansas city. Hill does it all for New Orleans, from throwing, running, and catching the football, he’s everywhere on the field and in the Saints’ loss in the Wild Card game, he was the best player on the field for New Orleans.

Lovett might not be quite that electric, especially not in his first season of NFL action, but don’t be shocked when he becomes quite the weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs.
