The KC Chiefs signed their second free agent with the latest being offensive lineman Mike Remmers. The deal became official on Saturday and now Remmers joins the Patrick Mahomes protection agency.

After losing Stefen Wisniewski, it became even more pivotal for the Kansas City Chiefs to find depth along the offensive line this offseason. Adding Mike Remmers might not be the spiciest of signings, but at least it’s a start.

Remmers, who will turn 31 next month, has been a journeyman throughout his NFL career, spending time with the Chargers, Panthers, Rams, Vikings, and Giants. The Chiefs will be his sixth team and 2020 will be his ninth NFL season. Remmers has the veteran experience the Chiefs are looking for this offseason and has been durable since his days with the Panthers in 2015.

Since 2015, Remmers has started at least double digit games and mostly been a mainstay along whatever team’s offensive line he’s been a part of. He spent time as a tackle for both Carolina and New York and played right guard for Minnesota during his time spent there.

With Remmers’ experience at right guard, could this be a sign that Laurent Duvernay-Tardif could potentially be on the move? Or does it mean that Remmers could compete for the left guard job with Andrew Wylie, who struggled throughout the course of the 2019 season?

As of now, the Chiefs starting o-line would likely consist of Eric Fisher at left tackle, Austin Reiter at center, LDT at right guard, and Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle with the left guard spot up in the air. It’ll probably consist of a summer battle between Remmers and Wylie.

The Chiefs should still look to target an offensive lineman (or two even) in the 2020 NFL Draft to compete for the left guard spot as well, but only having five picks could make that difficult to do when there are other needs to address.

Protecting Mahomes has to be one of the biggest priorities moving forward however. What good does it do to have a franchise quarterback if he has a bad line in front of him? Yes, Mahomes is good enough to overcome that, but injuries will happen more often if the protection isn’t there.

Remmers might not be someone who starts for the offensive line in 2020, but he has experience at multiple spots along the line and could definitely be used as a swing lineman should someone go down with an injury. Having a player like this is pivotal and hopefully Mike Remmers pans out and can be someone to rely on along the line.

What do you think of this signing, Chiefs Kingdom?
