KC Chiefs: Questions to answer at cornerback in 2020 offseason

One of the positions that has the most questions surrounding it this offseason for the KC Chiefs is at cornerback. What could the offseason look like at the position?
**EDITOR’S NOTE – This was written prior to Kendall Fuller signing with the Redskins**
It feels like every single offseason the Kansas City Chiefs are needing help at the cornerback position and that’s once again the case in 2020 as we inch closer to the start of free agency. The Chiefs have a lot of questions to answer at the position this offseason and it starts with the players they’re losing at the position.
Both Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller are hitting free agency on Wednesday and it’s very possible that neither returns to Kansas City for 2020 and beyond. Breeland was inked to a one-year deal this time last year while Fuller was acquired as part of the Alex Smith trade in 2018.
Breeland made his fair share of dumb plays throughout the 2019 season, but he was a good corner for this defense and losing him will be tough. Fuller looked to be a bit of a disappointment early on in 2019, but once Steve Spagnuolo moved him into more of a safety role, he was a much better weapon for the defense.

Without those two guys back in Chiefs red next season, that leaves Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton to carry the load. Ward had a good season, but relying on him to be the CB1 might not be the best strategy and Fenton probably isn’t ready to be a full-time starter.
So, the question then becomes: What will the Chiefs do to address the position this spring?
While it’d be great if Breeland and/or Fuller would re-sign and stay with the Chiefs, that doesn’t seem to be the likeliest scenario. The next option would be that the Chiefs use one of their five draft picks to add depth at cornerback and there are some great prospects at the position.
The best prospects who are likely to be available when the Chiefs are on the clock are names like Jeff Gladney (TCU), Noah Igbinoghene (Auburn), Trevon Diggs (Alabama), A.J. Terrell (Clemson), and Damon Arnette (Ohio State), according to The Draft Network. Gladney might not be there at pick 32, but the other four could still be sitting on the board.
Last year, the Chiefs signed Breeland and then didn’t address cornerback in the draft until the sixth round when they took Fenton. While that strategy ended up working out, they probably won’t be so lucky by doing something similar this year.
If they wanted to find a corner in free agency, Chris Harris, Xavier Rhodes, Desmond Trufant, Jimmy Smith, or Prince Amukamara could be all be options to sign to short-term deals. They’re on the back half of their careers, but Breeland looked to be that way too and that signing worked out well.
Whether they look for their CB1 of the future through free agency or through the draft, it’s something the KC Chiefs have to figure out this offseason.
