Two veterans have recently been released and could fit the bill of veterans to assist in defense of a Super Bowl championship for the KC Chiefs.
Teams coming off Super Bowl Championships often look to veterans to help fill and address voids on their roster. With their first trophy in 50 years, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to address roster holes at almost every position group on the roster.
Almost half the players on the roster are free agents, but two veterans have hit the market that could fit the bill to help the Chiefs, doing what aging veterans usually do; One year deals, specific roles, go for another run for a championship.
Let’s take a look at those veteran players.

Jimmy Graham, Tight End
The former Packers, Seahawks, and Saints tight end could help aid the Chiefs offense on a short-term deal. No, he’s not the same player he was during his days with the Saints, however, with the Chiefs offense being what it is and the weapons they currently have, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes could take advantage of the veterans ability to catch the ball, especially in the red zone.
With currently questions at the tight end position beyond Travis Kelce and depth concerns overall at eligible receivers (the wide receiver position is an issue as well but likely addressed in the draft), finding a player like Jimmy Graham to come in and possibly give it one more go for a ring could be enticing to the former Miami basketball player.
This move wouldn’t be the most exciting, but it’d provide Kansas City with a viable TE2 option behind Kelce for another year.
Cameron Wake, Defensive End
The Chiefs might lose pass rushers Chris Jones and Emmanuel Ogbah this offseason to bigger paydays, so maybe aging veteran pass rusher Cameron Wake can help.
Obviously not the same player he was and coming off a down season, Wake would be brought in to replace the role vacated by Terrell Suggs. Not an every down player, the Chiefs would view Wake as a third down, pass rush specialist coming off the edge opposite of Frank Clark.
Brett Veach is likely to look to address pass rusher, perhaps a veteran on a one year deal. Wake could be the type of player the Chiefs are targeting.
After getting a taste of the playoffs in 2019 with the Tennessee Titans, Wake is the type of player that could be interested in taking a veteran minimum deal for one run at a Super Bowl. Could he contribute and help in a specialized role on a Chiefs defense looking to replace a lot of players? It’s worth a shot.

If the Kansas City Chiefs are going to make another run, they are going to need to find perhaps specific veterans that can fulfill specific roles on the team.
It’s the difference between a role player (just a guy on the roster) and a guy brought in to play a specific role (what the Patriots have done for decades). The Chiefs are likely going to be in the business of bringing in veterans hoping for a run at the Lombardi before they hang up their cleats.

Jimmy Graham and Cameron Wake might be past their prime, but they could be just what the KC Chiefs are looking for in free agency this year.
