With spring training wrapped up and Opening Day delayed, it’s time to look at the biggest questions from this past week of Kansas City Royals spring training.

Before we dive into the biggest questions from this past week of spring training, some huge news hit this week. COVID-19 has led to many leagues postponing/delaying action and colleges have canceled their tournaments. Major League Baseball made the decision to suspend spring training and delay Opening Day for two weeks.

All of that being said, we did get some Kansas City Royals baseball this past week before games were stopped, so let’s take a look at the biggest questions from week three of spring training.

When will we finally see Adelberto Mondesi  play in Spring Training?

More from Kansas City Royals

Last week fans were led to believe that we were going to see Adalberto Mondesi take the field in a Cactus League game. This didn’t happen.

Manager Mike Matheny kept saying he’s “tracking well” to make Opening Day, but this on the outside doesn’t appear to be the case. It is looking very unlikely that he will be able to avoid starting the season on the injured list.

This is going to give Matt Reynolds the opportunity to be on the roster to start the season. Don’t anticipate him being in the starting lineup initially, but expect Nicky Lopez to be at shortstop with Whit Merrifield at second base.

The Royals had a pretty good look at Reynolds this spring. Even though it is “spring”, Reynolds is tied for the team lead in strike-outs with 14 and is only hitting .143. Anticipate him getting some limited playing time to start the season if Mondesi isn’t on the field soon.

Who will start Opening Day for the Royals?

It’d be shocking if wasn’t Brad Keller toeing the slab on Opening Day. Despite having an ERA of 14.85 this spring, it’s very hard to imagine Matheny going with someone else.

The other option is Danny Duffy, who has pitched six innings in two games without giving up a run. He was the Opening Day starter in 2017 and could be a good option.

Will COVID-19 (Coronavirus) even allow the Royals and MLB to even have a season?

Unfortunately, this is something that is much more important than the game of baseball.

By now everyone is aware how MLB has suspended all operations immediately. The Big 12 has cancelled their tournament and the NBA has suspended their season indefinitely along with most other leagues.

Kansas City, Missouri is now in a state of emergency. and as such, events with crowds of 1,000+ people are not allowed. With Opening Day at the K initially scheduled for April 2nd, that probably wouldn’t have happened even without Manfred’s ruling.

Out of all the questions so far out of Spring Training, this hands down is the only one that truly matters. Everyone needs to take caution and take care of each other. Lets just hope we can all get through this virus safely and get it behind us soon so we can get back to baseball.
