MIKE PENNEL

Last, but certainly not least, we have Mike Pennel, who came out of nowhere on the defensive side of the ball in 2019. Pennel’s career looked about dead in the water until the Chiefs took a chance on him and now – He’ll have the chance to earn a nice chunk of change in the offseason due to his dominant season as a Chief.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Pennel helped improve the Chiefs run defense significantly and he also had a key hit on Jimmy G in the Super Bowl that led to an interception. He’ll turn 29 years old in May, but the Chiefs need to try and keep him in a Chiefs uniform because he was a huge difference maker on defense and no one would have expected that in October when he arrived to Kansas City.

One year after their defense cost them dearly, the Kansas City Chiefs rebuilt their defense and saw it turn around at a fast pace. It turned around so quickly that their defense became a strength and helped them win the Super Bowl.

These six players were critical on the defensive side of the ball, but the bad news is that three of them are slated to be free agents in the next month. It’s unlikely that Kansas City is able to keep Breeland, Ogbah, and Pennel, but maybe Ogbah and Pennel staying in KC is doable.

Most people are going to remember the Honey Badger and Frank Clark for the rest of their lives, but these six players became a force to be reckoned with and no one really saw it coming from any of them.
