Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes best bargain on roster
Bleacher Report released an article listing every NFL team’s best bargain and unsurprisingly – Patrick Mahomes was the best bargain on the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster. Shocker! (Sarcasm)
The Kansas City Chiefs have the best quarterback in the league with Patrick Mahomes and everyone in the NFL world knows it. If they didn’t know it before this season, they certainly do now after Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 21 point fourth quarter comeback in Super Bowl LIV, which was KC’s first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.
Not that we truly need an explanation, as this was a pretty obvious answer, but Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report had this to say on why he chose Mahomes as the Chiefs’ best bargain,
"Because Mahomes still hasn’t signed an extension. And until he does, he’ll be one of the most underpaid players in the NFL with an average annual salary of just $4.1 million. That figure is a lot higher than most of the other players on this list, but Mahomes is the best player in the game right now, and it’s not even close. The reigning Super Bowl MVP (he’s the youngest quarterback ever to win that award) and 2018 regular-season MVP is by far the highest-rated passer in NFL history among those with at least 1,000 attempts."
It’s no secret that the Chiefs have had it pretty good the last few years and that’s because Mahomes was still on his rookie deal. He’s entering the fourth and final year of his rookie deal in 2020, but the consensus appears to be that he’ll be getting that fat new check by the end of the offseason. He deserves it too, accomplishing things that not only no Chiefs have ever done, but that no players have done either, as Gagnon noted in his blurb.
While Mahomes undoubtedly deserves whatever amount of money the Chiefs give him, it will make winning another Super Bowl much tougher; Just look at the other prime quarterbacks in the league and their accomplishments after they got paid: Aaron Rodgers has yet to go back to another Super Bowl after winning it nine years ago and Russell Wilson hasn’t been back since he lost to the Patriots in the 2014 season.
Those are two of the more recent examples and Mahomes could join that list once he gets paid. The hope is obviously that he agrees to take a hometown discount to that of what Tom Brady did in New England, but no one truly expects Mahomes to go that route. Would you go that route if you were him? You already have the ring, now go get paid.
The AFC West’s best bargains on Gagnon’s list were:

- Chargers: Desmond King – The 25 year old safety didn’t have a great 2019 campaign, but defensed ten passes in 2018 while hauling in three interceptions, taking one to the house.
- Broncos: Phillip Lindsay – The undrafted running back out of Colorado has put up back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in Denver to go along with 16 rushing touchdowns.
It’ll be interesting to see how much money Patrick Mahomes ends up getting, but Chiefs fans should expect this to greatly impact what kind of talent the team can bring in once he gets that big time money. All too often we see teams, even with great quarterbacks, underachieve once their franchise quarterback gets paid.
Here’s to hoping for the best this offseason!
