KC Chiefs: Phillip Dorsett could be nice receiver option for 2020

The wide receiver position is going to need some fine tuning for the KC Chiefs this offseason. Could Phillip Dorsett be someone the Chiefs look at on the free agent market?

The Kansas City Chiefs very well could lose their WR2 and WR3 this offseason, as Sammy Watkins‘ future as a Chief is up in the air and Demarcus Robinson is likely going to benefit greatly off of catching passes from Patrick Mahomes despite not doing a ton.

With Watkins and Robinson both potentially out the door, could Phillip Dorsett be someone the Chiefs might look to add in free agency? They won’t need a WR1, as Tyreek Hill has that job locked down, and Mecole Hardman could likely be bumped up to WR2. Throw in that Travis Kelce as one of the top weapons on offense, and Dorsett being a WR3 sounds feasible.

Dorsett – a first round pick in 2015 out of Miami by the Colts – spent the first two years of his career in Indianapolis before the Colts flipped him to New England in 2017. It came after Dorsett had – to this point – the best year of his career where he grabbed 33 receptions for 528 yards and two touchdowns.

Dorsett didn’t do as much damage with the Patriots and many thought he would, totaling 73 receptions for 881 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons. He had five touchdowns this past season.

The pros with Dorsett are that he’s young and fast. At age 27, Dorsett still has time left to shine in the league and his speediness would work great in the Chiefs’ fast moving high-flying offense. Dorsett ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine in 2015 in case you were wondering how fast the guy was.

The biggest con with Dorsett is that he hasn’t looked like a first round pick whatsoever despite playing with great quarterbacks in Indianapolis and New England. The Colts gave up on him rather quickly and that was an interesting trade at the time. He’s still young though and playing with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid could rejuvenate his career, but he absolutely wouldn’t be worth breaking the bank on.

Another thing to keep in mind this offseason is that this year’s wide receiver draft class is arguably the best ever, so the Chiefs could certainly try their luck at finding a WR2/WR3 in the draft if they don’t land a decent option in free agency.

Phillip Dorsett could benefit from an offense like Kansas City’s, but him being young and fast could land him a decent deal with another team. What would your thoughts be if the Chiefs decided to look into signing him?
