KC Chiefs: Tom Brady joining Raiders could make for fun 2020 season

The KC Chiefs have their franchise quarterback, but the Las Vegas Raiders do not and it’s sounding like they’re further away from finding one, as they’re reportedly looking to give $60 million to Tom Brady over the next two years.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on Saturday that the Las Vegas Raiders are “ready to offer Tom Brady two-year, $60 million deal”, which had to make Kansas City Chiefs fans everywhere chuckle.

It’s no secret that the Chiefs have owned the AFC West for the last four years and – fresh off their first Super Bowl title in 50 years – will look to keep doing so for awhile with Patrick Mahomes only being 24 years old. The only way another team is going to be able to strip the divisional crown away from the Chiefs is if Mahomes or another key player suffers a major injury or if said team is able to find a quarterback as good as Mahomes.

Well, if the Raiders are thinking that Tom Brady is going to be what he was in New England, that’s not realistic.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

I’m not saying that Brady wasn’t ever a good player because that’s obviously not true. The guy has six Super Bowl rings and played in the big game nine times throughout his two decade long career; The dude is a legend. But since last year’s Super Bowl, Brady has looked like a shell of himself on the football field.

Even if this deal does happen – and who knows if it will – the Raiders should know they won’t be getting the Tom Brady of yesteryear. Those days are long gone. It’d also be a bit perplexing as to why Brady would want to go to the Raiders when they’ll be in year one of their Las Vegas residency and it doesn’t really seem like a fit for him.

The biggest reason Chiefs Kingdom will be following this story is obviously because if Brady does sign with the Raiders, it means he’ll be playing the Kansas City Chiefs twice a year for the next two years. Brady had it really good in New England playing in the weak AFC East, but the AFC West wouldn’t be the same kind of cakewalk for him.

Even with Brady not being that same elite player, him donning the silver and black will drum up more interest for the Chiefs/Raiders games, which have been one-sided since Andy Reid came to town in 2013. Both the Chiefs and Raiders went 12-4 in 2016, but the Chiefs swept the season series that year and neither game was particularly close.

Brady won’t put the Raiders over the edge because we saw down the stretch last season that the Raiders aren’t close to being a good team, but he’ll make them a little more competitive. If he did decide to sign with the Raiders, fans could surely count on at least one Chiefs/Raiders game being in primetime.

I don’t care if Brady signs with the Raiders or not, but I’d like for the Raiders to keep Derek Carr. He’s only beaten the Chiefs twice and is 0-6 against them at Arrowhead. I’d miss the two easy wins every year if they were to part ways with Carr.

While Brady joining the division could make things a little more interesting for the Chiefs, don’t be fooled; The KC Chiefs are still the kings of the AFC West until someone is able to dethrone them, and Tom Brady or not, the Raiders aren’t doing that.
